Determining Actual Malaria Risk

According to the World Health Organization, in 2015 there an estimated 214 million malaria infections reported and 438,000 deaths worldwide. Although these numbers have been decreasing, infections in travelers have been increasing, and these statistics do not include the numerous cases that go unreported or undiagnosed. Quantifying the actual risk to the traveler is impossible. Many have tried to calculate risk, but they vastly underestimate true risk. The most common measurement used here is the number of diagnosed malaria cases in a returned traveler divided by the number of travelers to that country. Diptheria on the Rise

Alarming pockets of diphtheria outbreaks have been occurring worldwide recently. Diphtheria is a bacterial infection, caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae. It is transmitted person to person, via respiratory droplets and close physical contact. After exposure, you can develop symptoms in 1-10 days, which include mild fever, sore throat, difficulty swallowing and hoarseness. The distinctive feature is a firm, grey, adherent pseudomembrane that appears in 2-3 days over the tonsils, pharynx, nostrils or larynx, and can extend into the trachea. ONTARIO GOV'T TO PAY FOR ANNUAL HIGH DOSE FLU VACCINE FOR SENIORS

The Ontario government released news today regarding a series of initiatives aimed at providing better care for seniors. Included amongst them is coverage of the high-dose flu vaccine for this age group, Fluzone HD, starting in the 2018-2019 flu season. There is a significant body of evidence indicating better efficacy with this vaccine in this age group compared to the standard flu vaccine.
